  • What is the difference between CME and CPD?
Continuing Medical Education (CME) is a specific type of continuing education (CE) designed for those in the medical field to maintain their competence and stay updated on new and developing areas within their profession. Its goal is to enhance healthcare professionals' knowledge and skills, ultimately leading to improved health services. Continuing Professional Development (CPD), on the other hand, refers to the ongoing, systematic development of knowledge and skills necessary for health professionals to remain competent in their profession. CPD aims to ensure professionals continue to meet the evolving demands of their field. As an example, here is a list of competencies:
  • Why is it important to earn CME/CPD points?
After obtaining a professional degree or qualification, earning CPD/CME points helps healthcare professionals stay updated and enhance their knowledge within their field. CPD/CME is designed to improve professionals' performance, which ultimately leads to better patient care, public health services, and overall health system improvement. It also ensures healthcare professionals maintain a high level of competence. Globally, health authorities are making CME points a mandatory requirement for maintaining professional licenses. This process applies to many specialties, including Physicians, Pharmacists, Nurses, Midwives, General Practitioners, Radiologists, Dentists, and Allied Health Staff.
  • How many CME points do I need to renew my medical license?
Physicians need 40 points, Nurses need 20 points, and Allied Healthcare professionals need 10. If professionals exceed the target, a maximum of 10 CPD points can be carried forward to the next year. If the target is not met, the missing points must be made up in the following year.
  • What activities fall under CME/CPD Category 1 and Category 2?
Category 1 CME focuses on education related to a specific specialty content area. These requirements are set by your specialty board and individual state. Category 1 activities can be completed through lectures, conferences, and online programs. Category 2 CME activities are more self-directed and should be beneficial to a healthcare professional's practice. These activities are not designated as Category 1 but still contribute to ongoing education and can result in a certificate that demonstrates a healthcare professional’s commitment to continuous learning.
